Golf course is a price worth paying for school

WE all agree that St John's Primary and Portobello High School are no longer fit for purpose.

The Council have looked at many sites for the new build but, I am led to believe the Portobello Golf Course site is the only viable alternative.

The Golf Course site and surrounding parkland is a community amenity. If the new build goes ahead, 1800 pupils and their families will benefit.

There will be more vocational and non-vocational activities on offer to all, during the day, the evening and the weekend in this new purpose-built school fit for the future. The new schools will have extensive sports facilities introducing their own outdoor pitches and courts. These outdoor pitches will be available for public use.

At present our children from Portobello are subjected to an education in a concrete jungle and have to travel to access certain sports facilities.

We would lose our 150-year-old golf course, but like myself, I am sure the 120 members would be delighted to travel an extra two minutes in their cars to access a new improved council course.

The people of Portobello are entitled to a green school set in tree-lined parkland. A High School is the hub of the any community and heightens community spirit.

No-one wants to lose green space but we don't want to waste it. Let's use it and enjoy it!
