Golden chance

IT is dismaying that the proposal to mine gold at Tyndrum (your report, 6 March) has met with opposition from those unfamiliar with mining. It is to be a small-scale operation, out of sight from the main road and, once finished, would be less intrusive than the extensive lead mines above the village.

Indeed, as with the old mines at Wanlockhead and Newtongrange, it could one day become an attraction in its own right. Ironically, the very bodies opposing the plan will then be zealously protecting their rich mining heritage.

I just hope the gold mine proves more successful than the nearby lead mines, which I am researching. In over 180 years of intermittent working, they never made a profit.
