Give and take

Could it ever be fair to ask all potential recipients of donated organs to themselves be on a donor register (your report, 12 July)? Many of those needing transplants will have lived lives of pain and suffering, and their own organs may not be transplantable, however altruistic they may be.

Sadly, we have not all been blessed with healthy bodies.
Living donors often display incredible bravery in helping their loved ones and indeed strangers also, by, for example, donating one of their kidneys. Hopefully, after sensitive, well-informed debate, many more potential donors will come forward. I am happy to carry an organ donor card, as are my next of kin. My own hope is that we follow Wales and adopt a presumed consent system.
