Funding focus

I had always believed that
research funds went to universities best able to do the work.

The quality of the researchers, regardless of their location in the UK or their ethnicity, might be expected to prevail in any competition.

Business secretary Vince Cable obviously sees things differently in thinking that universities in Scotland get a “disproportionate amount”
of funding (your report, 5
September).

I half expect him to discover that Scotland produces a disproportionate amount of spirits for export.
