Fruitful debate

There are three reactions to the recommendation to eat seven items of fruit and vegetable per day (Stephen Jardine, Perspective, 5 April).

One is to agree with the negative reaction of the writer, that it is “pie in the sky”; another is to sensibly accept it – like not smoking and taking exercise – and work towards it. Or lastly, it is to wonder why on earth it has taken so long for experts to announce something that is obvious to any thinking person: namely, that the human being is not designed to sit on a couch eating crisps but to be roaming about eating fruits, nuts, vegetables and the occasional fish or chicken.
