I wholeheartedly agree with Donald Smith when, at this time of broader constitutional issues being examined in Scotland, he says: “Renouncing outworn claims to national status and influence, churches can renew their commitment and purpose in local communities” (Platform, 18 March).

I wish him luck in realising this very fair vision for what he calls “a minority tradition”.

A church which caters for the religious lifestyles of those adults who choose to attend and which expresses views from an equal platform to competitor views will meet no opposition from secularists.
