Forced marriage

I am sure that whenever the Scottish referendum takes place, the Unionist parties will be reminded that forced marriages will and should end in divorce.

The Scots were totally against the Union with England but had no democratic vote on this serious issue.

Earlier attempts in 1606, 1667 and 1689 to unite the two nations failed. To get round this matter, Scottish aristocrats in Parliament accepted bribes from the English government.

Between them, Lord Banff and the Marquess of Tweedale received more than £1,000 in bribes from the parliament south of the Border.

As SNP MSP Winifred Ewing said in 1999: “The Scottish Parliament adjourned on the 25th of March in the year 1707 is hereby reconvened.”

It is the wish of many, if not most, that Ms Ewing lives to see Scotland as an independent nation.
