I DO not entirely agree with your leader “fishing about for next food scandal” (Perspective, 30 January) when you say the main issue with fish is “where and when the fish was caught”.

The horsemeat scandal broke in the UK last January. At the same time, there was a fish scandal in France. The problem seemed to arise from the number of words for, say, “cod” round the world. So cod fish-fingers bought in French supermarkets did not necessarily contain the customers’ idea of cod in terms of the label.

That was just one example of buying fish from a foreign supplier outside France. I wonder if the same linguistic problems might arise, say, between south-east Asian suppliers and fish processors in the UK?
