Flawed theory
Sir Hugh Pennington (your report, 4 November) fears that a Yes vote for independence would be bad for science.
A scientific attitude should lead him to consider whether it is more likely that an independent Scotland would spend more on science and research given, among other things, that it would no longer be paying towards UK nuclear weapons and that, in contrast to England, Scottish governments have kept under-graduate university education in Scotland free for Scottish-based students.
And what of a No vote? If that leads to a UK government reducing the return of Scottish revenues to Scotland through the block grant then there may be less money for education, science and research here, whatever the wishes and intentions of the Scottish Government
