Fitting tribute

I’ve been delighted to read reports of the swift progress being made in refurbishing Edinburgh’s Panmure House, the final home of economist and leading protagonist of the Scottish Enlightenment, Adam Smith.

Smith’s legacy as the “father of modern economics” is beyond question but I am particularly struck by the enormous breadth of his influence, stretching far beyond these shores and across the world. When complete, the refurbished Panmure House will provide a lasting monument to Smith in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, almost 240 years after the publication of his seminal work, The Wealth of Nations.

Once it is complete, I look forward to seeing this historic building realise its full potential as an appropriate venue for the sort of stimulating economic discourse and debate of which I am sure Adam Smith would be very proud.

By returning Panmure House to its former glory, Scotland pays a fitting tribute to one of its most influential sons.
