Fishy business

I was interested to read the
article, “Activists to call for
Fisheries Bill to help wild
waters” (5 October), however, it seems to me that there was an unasked question of the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

It says the bill could be incredibly important for maintaining and improving the quality of Scotland’s waters, which support such iconic species such as Atlantic salmon.

This begs the question of why, if it is so concerned about this iconic species, it is not campaigning for the end of killing it in the name of sport.

Last year, 24,105 wild salmon were reported as caught by anglers and then killed. These fish had all returned to the river in the hope of reproducing the species.

Surely, if we are to protect the species, then we need to ensure that every fish that returns to the river both is able to breed but also to survive to reproduce again in future years.
