Fight and flight

I am familiar with Edinburgh Airport, but a recent early-morning drop-off – and wrong turning trying to get back to the A8 – forcibly reminded me of how atrocious is the road signage and lighting. Tiny, dirty signs, poorly illuminated, and inadequate sodium street lighting make what can be a stressful enough drive – time constraints, crotchety children etc – even more so. And that’s for the natives.

Foreign visitors must wonder if they have arrived in a third-world country rather than a European capital city (although that suspicion is likely to be confirmed by city-centre litter and uneven, cheaply patched pavements). It is not good enough for Scotland’s capital.
