Family Bible

Brian Allan (Letters, 22 April) claims Britain is a Christian country “founded on fundamental principles as set out in the Bible”.

What would they be exactly? The Ten Commandments? Or perhaps just the two Commandments endorsed by Jesus (“love God and your neighbour as yourself”, Matt 22:36-40)? Not much on which to found a country.

As for the “family values”, Mr Allan refers to, Jesus urged his followers to abandon their family and possessions (Mk 10:29; Matt 19:29). Should we all do that?

DAVID Cameron and correspondent Brian Allan (Letters, 22 April) think Britain is still a Christian country. On grounds of church attendance alone, it would surely be truer to say it is a post-Christian country.

In fact, we are no longer bound by the diktats of a God dreamt up long ago, who embodies the ideas of that time – and we have rid ourselves of some of His followers’ doubtful practices.

Christian values are a mixed bag, so it is good to be post-Christian. We have a chance to keep the good, and reject the bad.
