Fair enough

I read with interest your piece regarding the setting up of a
Travellers’ site at Aikey Brae, near Old Deer in Aberdeenshire (4
January), particularly the part about the annual Aikey Brae Fair in July which attracts thousands of visitors annually.

This was certainly true up until the early 1950s when agricultural horses, the focus of the fair, were big business.

In the following years the fair became a date on the travelling showman’s calendar, but for the past few decades has existed only in local memory despite an attempt to revive it some 20 years ago. It is, however, interesting to note that the event was so renowned in its time that it is still considered contemporary by Central Belt journalists!
