EU voting

Kezia Dugdale (your report, 30 May) is correct: EU nationals who have made the UK their permanent home should be able to vote in our national elections if they want to.

And they can. They just have to express their long-term commitment through becoming British citizens and then they can vote to their hearts’ content.

However, giving votes to people who are not committed to permanent settlement and citizenship produces a section of the electorate overly focused on short-term gain and less concerned about long-term and even inter-generational consequences.

And the last thing we need is another one of those.
