EU pressure

On Sunday, the Danish foreign minister joined the prime and foreign ministers of Spain, the presidents of the European Council and European Commission in insisting that an independent Scotland would have to reapply to join the European Union under Article 49.

Alex Salmond’s case for the ease with which we would gain entry into Europe under Article 48 with our current share of the rebate and without having to join the eurozone is falling apart.

The most likely scenario is that, come 5 May, 2016, the date of the next Holyrood election, no progress whatsoever could have been made on European entry.

With Salmond’s strategy exposed by that time as having been based on a false prospectus, the likelihood of the SNP retaining power is inconceivable.

It is becoming clearer every day that Ian Gardner (Letters, 26 May) is correct in suggesting that a second referendum will be essential.
