Enlightenment

Robert Veitch (Letters, 17 February) says the Enlightenment started in England. I am sure "les philosophes" in France like Diderot, Voltaire and Rousseau would have had something to say about that. They produced the "Encyclopedie" one of the principal works of the Enlightenment. Here they attacked contemporary religion and argued for reason to take its place, and quite rightly so.
