England/Britain

Allan Massie makes a lot of sense (Opinion, 30 March). Like Alex Salmond, I too shall support England in the World Cup with some degree of reluctance.

My reason for the reluctance has to do with what Mr Massie describes as "the tendency to identify England with Britain" which has "been diluted since England won the World Cup in 1966''. He then he goes on to discuss the change in flag-flying at major sporting events back up his view.

However, there is still evidence elsewhere to suggest that the slogan "England equals Britain'' is alive and well. We are still plagued with the "in bed with an elephant" syndrome, and without devolution to the Scottish Parliament of broadcasting in particular, it will always be so. I do hope England win, but afterwards … remember 1966!
