Engineer's credit

Your feature on the closure of the Queen Mother's in Glasgow rightly gives prominence to the pioneering development of ultrasound scanning by Professor Ian Donald, another "first" of which Scotland can be proud. However, the caption to the photograph of Prof Donald refers to his "creation" of the ultrasound equipment. This, I am afraid, is another example of the creative genius of the engineers who realise the hardware (and nowadays software) behind such technology

The brilliant young electronic engineer who realised Prof Donald's dream was one Tom Brown, who is still with us, in retirement in Kinghorn. He was one of the co-authors of the definitive paper in this field, along with Donald and his medical colleague, McVicar.
