Engineering error

I refer to your Now and Then feature (19 August) in which you state that on this day in 1966 the Tay Road Bridge was opened. This statement is correct, however the caption under the photo: “designed by architect William Fairhurst”, is incorrect.

The Tay Road Bridge, as is the case for the majority of bridges was designed by a civil engineer, in this instance WA Fairhurst.

While architects can sometimes play a role in deciding the aesthetic form of bridges, it is the unsung civil engineer who turns concepts into a concrete/steel reality.
