Energy union

There was so much controversy surrounding the appointment of the European Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, but less attention has been given to who might take over as next president of the European 
Council.

The Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, who is a possible candidate, has been arguing for a European energy union.

The crisis in the Ukraine, with its implications for important member states, is concentrating minds. However, common energy policies would surely hold implications for an independent Scotland.

Besides convergence of gas and electricity markets, not forgetting renewable energy sources, Brussels bureaucracy might want to have its say on North Sea oil prices, taxation and revenues in an effective common energy union.
