Elite problem

Dr MARY Brown (Letters, 6 April) suggests we could solve our problems “through our active participation in democratic processes” – notwithstanding the fact fewer and fewer people participate in politics at local, national or European level.

Also, arguably today we live in a modern “mass society” in which there are a variety of elites.

Perhaps realistically “democratic processes” according to different writers merely replace one elite group with another.

It is debatable whether different elites, in particularly economic and political, form a ruling elite.

Is there any chance ideas about the “Big society” will make a difference in “active participation”?
