Electors beware

The last two letters on these 
pages (22 October) were a refreshing change from the fantasies of socialist utopia we are so used to reading in The Scotsman letters page.

Malcolm Parkin’s stark reminder that “there has never been a successful socialist government in the history of the world” is as relevant for the acolytes of Nicola Sturgeon as it is for those of Ed Miliband.

And the letter from Dr John Cameron comparing health care in Singapore with our “moribund, monolithic NHS” is yet one more reminder that, on balance, the founders of our NHS were possibly more intent on establishing a service founded on 1940s trade union practices than they were in maintaining the high standards of patient care which already existed on very modest budgets at that time.

Electors, like buyers, should 
beware.
