Efficient air traffic

The recent and forthcoming changes in air traffic control procedures are to be welcomed and may well be overdue.

In describing them, (Friends of The Scotsman, 31 December), Paul Peers begins and ends his article by emphasising that the changes will reduce the environmental guilt factor many feel when
flying.

This is a case where whatever views are held about human emissions, there are clear and far-reaching cost and time savings to be made by adopting such fuel and route efficiencies. In other words, a win situation whatever your emphasis and views.

The UK, and especially Scotland, has emissions legislation beyond that adopted in most other countries. We will do well to emphasise and focus our limited resources on actions which also have clear efficiency benefits.
