Economic control

Joyce McMillan (Perspective,
6 December) condemns the “far economic right”. This is a curious term to use, given that “far right” is a description commonly applied to those who advocate National Socialism.

As it is, Labour’s proposal to impose price controls is Marxist-Leninist in nature and follows what the Marxist governments in Zimbabwe and Venezuela have done. It is worth remembering that the Soviet Union had universal price controls in the economy and that price controls are totalitarian.

What is really mean-minded is not the idea that the state is neither God nor Santa Claus, but the idea that the individual belongs to the state and must submit to expropriation whenever those in power decide it is in order.
