Dropped the ball

I read with interest and some amusement the "facts" about the night following the 1988 Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield (your report, 28 June) when John Jeffries and Dean Richards were reported to have kicked the 100-year-old trophy along Princes Street.

I am happy to accept Jeffreys' recent announcement that the cup was "not kicked" but rather thrown, and "was dropped". Having seen a photograph of the Calcutta Cup after its epic safari along Edinburgh's most famous street, might I suggest that the famous old cup was indeed dropped more than once.
