Driven crazy

IAIN Campbell writes in a very aggressive manner about parking fines (Letters, 24 March).

If he had driven round Edinburgh and tried to stay within the law in parking while also trying to work, he might have a more sympathetic view.

We work in town all day, every day and I can assure your readers that no-one deliberately tries to get a parking ticket.

I might have to do viewings and meetings at five to ten addresses during the day. When you meet a new client, you often get involved in a discussion that can last a while and I often have to run back to the car just in time.

My main focus is on securing the business of the client, not my parking. This is clearly my fault; I know the rules. However, when I am doing this several times every day there is no question I will occasionally break the rules by mistake.

As a new business owner, I can hardly afford to pay myself so I will definitely avoid parking tickets where possible.

There is absolutely no question that being charged 60 or even the reduced 30 is punitive. This level of fine must, absolutely must, be applied only to people who have parked illegally to start with or not bought a ticket at all.

Some graduated scale of charges is the only sensible solution.
