Drinking game

Andrew Whitaker is one of The Scotsman journalists we read as much for the quality of his prose as the content of his articles (and there was a lot of him to read today).

His short piece (your report, 16 February) on the history of the alcohol ban at Scottish football grounds almost proposes its own solution to the vexed question of whether alcohol consumption can be permitted safely in the stadia again.

If the ban was triggered by drunken Rangers and Celtic fans why not trial a return to individual alcohol licensing for all football grounds, except Ibrox and Celtic Park?

The less wealthy clubs could certainly use the revenue. If Old Firm fans prove able to drink sensibly at other teams’ alcohol-licenced grounds, the licence could be extended to the Glasgow clubs the very next season. Simple.
