Drink problem

Ellis Thorpe (Letters, 5 January) drew attention to the culture of drunkenness that causes so much hurt, harm and expense in Scotland.

It is hard to imagine politicians really tackling this, however.

Firstly, they probably share the cultural acceptance of drunkenness to one degree or another.

Secondly, they realise just how unpopular it would be to take such a principled stand.

Drunkenness is inherently irresponsible, but our politicians and educators prefer to stick to safe ground such as pricing and health information, instead of showing real leadership and addressing the heart of the problem.
