Drab chancellors

I found Alan McKinney's analysis of the BBC's responsibilities regarding election coverage (Letters, 6 April) to be enlightening. Having watched the drab, dreary, driech debate featuring the three "wannabe chancellors" I concluded that watching paint dry would have created more excitement.

On reflection, perhaps the BBC has, however unwittingly, helped the SNP by exposing the paucity of talent in the main UK political parties.

Lesley Riddoch is right to praise Vince Cable's recent showing in the three would-be chancellors' debate (Opinion, 5 April) , but it is unlikely the Liberal Democrats will repeat their triumph during the forthcoming Prime Ministerial hustings.

The overriding problem for the Liberal Democrats is that in terms of political talent they are very much a one-man band. The problem for Nick Clegg is that the one man is Vince Cable.
