Double standard

David Sole, former captain of the Scotland rugby team, is absolutely right: the 1990 Grand Slam win was "a great moment in sport, no more, no less" (Letters, 1 March).

Who has ever denied this? Why would supporters of the winning side complain? In this continuing biennial demonisation of Scots sports supporters it is forgotten that Brian Moore, former England rugby international, appears unable to accept defeat and that, as Scots were enjoying the Grand Slam victory, within a few months England football fans would be on their way to Italia 90, where they committed many acts of violence including stabbings.

English football clubs were banned from European football for years due to the behaviour of their fans. Why is it only Scots fans who are deemed "racist" and must perform "mea culpa" regularly until we become as "good" as our neighbours?
