Donor status

Following recent debate on organ donation in relation to the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence, I am writing to set out the position of NHS Blood and Transplant’s (NHSBT).

By agreement within the UK, NHSBT acts as the UK-wide organ donation organisation providing tissues and solid
organs to hospitals, saving and improving many lives across the UK.

In the event of independence for Scotland, NHSBT would go on serving the continuing UK.

Any role for NHSBT in an
independent Scotland would be a matter for the relevant governments to negotiate.

It is not for NHSBT to comment on any potential future
arrangements.
