Divisive talk

I find myself concerned by Alex Salmond's use of language during the recent Scottish leaders' debate. I cannot understand how he believes it is appropriate to use a phrase such as "take this country to freedom" without encouraging a sense of hatred and racism towards English and other immigrants.

The Scotland I want to be part of is a tolerant and fair society, especially towards our neighbours, the English, with whom we have an intertwined history.

The North-east is home to many nationalities crucial to the oil and gas industry, itself a key element of our national economy. I would like to know how the SNP intends to ensure that the English and other nationalities are always welcome to live and work here, as I fear that the party encourages racism, especially towards the former.

I will never forget Mr Salmond's opening address to the Scottish Parliament, newly elected as First Minister, when he welcomed his parents into the debating chamber. As I recall it, he claimed that this was the first time they had ever seen him debate as they wouldn't set foot in Westminster.

This is combative, unnecessary language that itself breeds hatred and I fail to understand how Mr Salmond considers it becoming of his current role and responsibilities.
