Distress in live exports

It is disappointing to see Dan Buglass and the NFUS welcoming the imminent resumption of the tragic trade in dairy calves to mainland Europe (Business, 5 December). What this means is more long and stressful journeys by road and sea to the continent for very young animals and more rearing in systems that would not be permitted in Scotland on welfare grounds.

The previous Scottish Executive frequently stated its preference for a trade in meat rather than the long distance transport of animals for export. In view of the current administration's overt support for live exports - which means not only calf exports, but also the trade in older ewes destined for slaughter without pre-stunning - are we heading backwards, in animal welfare terms?
