Digital turn-off

I welcome your report (29 March) that digital radio (DAB) could be a turn-off for listeners. Indeed it could, especially if all national stations are to go digital.

The reception problems are serious, particularly if you are moving; in-car reception is very patchy, and even sitting at a roadside caf the signal is interrupted by cars and – would you believe it – passing pedestrians.

If your FM signal is weak, you get some hiss or interference but you can often still hear the programme. Digital simply cuts out; you get nothing.

Imagine this at just the moment the newsreader or interviewee gets to the crux, or the winning goal is scored.
