Different issues
Andrew Whitaker (your report, 7 July) mentions calls for a referendum on the monarchy. It seems to me entirely sensible to keep the questions of independence and the monarchy separate so that voters can decide on one question without implying a decision on the other.
A possible future option, which would both keep the form of a monarchy and provide for an elected head of state, would be to keep the Kingdom of the Scots, declare the throne vacant and elect a guardian, on the precedent of William Wallace and others, to act as head of state. Another possibility would be to let the presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament act as head of state when one is needed.
