Can I recommend that Joseph G Miller (Letters, 23 September) reads How Not To Be Wrong (the hidden maths of everyday life) by Jordan Ellenberg, specifically chapter 17.

In it Ellenberg demonstrates why, in a ballot of more than two choices, the majority don’t get what they want.

Mr Miller claims 20 to 30 per cent wanted more powers. 
Perhaps they did. They could easily have got them by voting Yes. Perhaps they did.

No, let’s stick to a straightforward, fairer, choice of two.
