Derail tram firm

MICHAEL Fry (Opinion, 30 January) is off target when he criticises Edinburgh councillors for their support of the tram project. The principle of the tram is sound and – eventually – will greatly enhance both the image and efficiency of public transport in Edinburgh.

Where councillors have erred is in their dogged defence of the scheme's project manager, TIE, while the project runs further and further out of control. Never in the modern history of tram projects in Europe has there been such a chronic escalation of costs, severe pruning of route mileage, lengthy delays and contractual disputes as we are witnessing in Edinburgh.

Instead of trying to save cash in other areas, the council should urgently consider dispensing with TIE and find an experienced project manager with a proven track record to rescue the tram project before it is too late.
