Defence spending

M Smythe (Letters, 16 March) is incorrect to say Scotland would have to spend 2 per cent of GDP on defence to remain in Nato.

Of the 28 members, only the US, UK, France, Turkey and Greece spend 2 per cent, while Lithuania (0.8 per cent), Latvia (1 per cent) and Estonia (1.7 per cent) are much nearer to any threats than Scotland. The real question is whether Scotland should be in Nato at all.
