Defence numbers

It’s hardly surprising that the number of defence personnel in Scotland should have hit a post-war low despite previous promises that numbers would increase (your report, 20 August).

No government leader in his right mind would pour money into a country where there was a prospect of separation in a few years and thus defence jobs are a casualty of persisting uncertainty over the independence referendum.

In some ways David Cameron seems to be supporting Scottish independence by acceding to Alex Salmond’s almost every demand. Perhaps a UK without Scotland would be more winnable for the Tories at the next general election than the UK as it stands at present.
