Debating point

ALEX Salmond’s goading of David Cameron to come to Scotland to debate independence (Letters, 12 February) has one purpose in mind. It is not so much the debate that is central to his fervent wish but the prospect of using the Conservative Prime Minister as a target.

In the unlikely event of Mr Cameron taking this bait, the SNP hierarchy will undoubtedly marshall noisy protesters brandishing placards and shouting abuse, to seek his every discomfort and embarrassment.

Whatever the result of the referendum, the way the debate is being conducted is engendering bitterness which will prevail long after the vote.
