Debate of decade

IN spite of several letters on these pages recently pointing out that a new decade logically starts with a year numbered xxx1, you carried a report (2 January) which said: "Little Ramsay Douglas Wilson could not wait to become one of the first babies of the new decade – arriving in the world just 30 seconds after the bells rang in 2010."

The letters I referred to pointed out that a decade starts with the year '1' and ends with '10' – these aren't just matters of opinion, they're matters of fact. The subject merely requires a small amount of thought to realise that "the new decade" starts in a year's time.
