Cyber revolution

THIS was hailed as likely to be the first social media general election, one in which “Cybernat” has become a derogatory term thanks to the postings of some extremists.

However, I suspect the SNP engaged with many more people through social media than the other Scottish parties.

With more young people politically aware post-referendum, this was fertile territory.

Also, it seems the cult of celebrity is as big in politics as elsewhere in society. Again, the SNP benefited from a leader whom the media was happy to feature. And who was “followed” on social media.

In time, academics will provide rigorous analysis of the 2015 election. That analysis may well disprove these initial observations. But political parties must recognise that the world has changed.
