Cut away

The doomsters are at it again, forecasting drastic cuts ahead for council and government services. The news that councils and government departments would be cash-strapped and would have to make swingeing economies delighted me, however.

If only the credit crunch had come a few years earlier, before John Prescott had unleashed the government's and local councils' politically-correct brigade on our roads and town centres.

Just think. There would have been no money available for all those thousands of traffic bumps, narrowed roads, awkward chicanes and constantly lowering speed limits. We might even have missed out on blue, brown and green waste bins with all the accompanying detailed commandments about what should go where and when.

Bring on the cuts. At least the worry of how to apply them will take our bureaucrats' attention away from more mad schemes to torture us taxpayers.
