Count the years

AS a former maths teacher, I had hoped enough had been written about the correct mathematics to be used for the naming of millennia and decades and that the mathematically challenged had been put to flight ten years ago when they said the first day of 2000 was the first of the new millennium when, in fact, the third millennium did not start until 1 January, 2001.

So if we are going to celebrate the first decade of the third millennium let us at least wait until the tenth year of the third millennium has been and gone.
