Confused state

Foreign Secretary William Hague’s confusion over “Team GB” (your report, 18 June) is understandable. I am also confused.

Since the only Commonwealth country in the British Isles is the UK itself, why are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland competing as if they were separate members of the Commonwealth?

The individual states of Canada and Australia do not compete separately.

Only if it became independent would Scotland be entitled to become a member of the Commonwealth.
