Coal-fired future

THE Stone Age did not end because the world ran out of stone and the Fossil Fuel Age will end long before we run out of fossil fuel, but for now coal retains its importance.

The use of this abundant, inexpensive resource will grow globally deep into the century and remain almost indefinitely as part of any pragmatic and realistic national energy strategy.

Growth in coal-fired generation since 2010 has been greater than that of all non-fossil-fuel sources combined and, at around 33 per cent, its use is at its highest level since 1970.
