CO2 injustice

The Dutch judiciary court has ordered the Dutch government to cut the Netherlands’ greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25 per cent by 2020. (Your report, 25 June)

The judgment is based on a human rights argument claiming that Dutch citizens were at risk from “extreme weather, shrinking ice caps and shortages of food and water”.

Taking short-term action to meet the 25 per cent target by 2020 will be mega-expensive and the Dutch public are unlikely to welcome this.

Netherlands emissions are infinitesimal and hardly register on a global scale whereas China and India are refusing to reduce their CO2 emissions until after 2030.
