Close to home

I enjoyed reading Hugh Reilly’s article, “The bank of parental pockets makes a lot of sense” (Perspective, 6 May), in which he discusses the pleasure of being able to help his children with a deposit for their first homes.

Our children are in their 30s now and both of them are still renting while they save up for a deposit – and all the other costs associated with buying a home.

Their only friends of similar age who own homes are those whose parents helped with their deposit, or those who were prepared to live in the suburbs – far away from the “fun” that our offspring prioritised.

We would love to help them financially to get on the housing ladder but we simply don’t have the means.

We do, however, have advice, and I’m assured that one day they will listen to it.
