Climate of lies

THERE is a general maxim for those who wish to seek the truth about complex matters: base your understanding on well-established facts and then ask the right questions.

Your two correspondents, Clark Cross and Neil Craig (Letters, 9 September) together illustrate how those who deny the reality of human-caused global warming fail to apply this maxim.

Clark Cross claims that man-made carbon dioxide makes up only 2 per cent of the atmosphere: that is not true. Human emissions have been more than enough to provide the 40 per cent increase in carbon dioxide since the start of the Industrial Revolution.

Neil Craig is concerned about whether climate scientists receive public money. The one bases his beliefs on false information. The other asks an irrelevant question. So, neither makes any progress towards the truth.
